Marine autopilots are advanced steering systems that automatically maintain a vessel’s course, reducing helm workload and enhancing overall boating comfort.
These systems use GPS, compass, and motion sensors to deliver precise, responsive control in a variety of sea conditions.
Autopilots integrate seamlessly with chartplotters and navigation systems, enabling features such as route following and waypoint steering.
Whether cruising long distances or navigating tight waterways, they improve safety, fuel efficiency, and onboard convenience for modern boaters.

Autopilots - FAQ
How well can a new autopilot steer a boat?
A properly sized and configured autopilot can steer a boat as well as a competent skipper – eventually.
It does require adjustment of steering response and parameters, plus time on the water for the modern autopilot electronics to ‘learn’ how the boat steers and responds in different conditions.
What size autopilot is right for my boat?
The proper autopilot is dictated by the size of the vessel (length overall and displacement), type of steering (mechanical, hydraulic, etc) and
the type of steerage on the boat (tiller, wheel, outboard).
Unsure about which autopilot to select
Please contact us and we can help find the best match.
When upgrading my autopilot, should I also replace the pump or drive?
If the pump/drive on the boat still works usually it can work with the new autopilot. Please contact us and we can help with compatibility.
Can a Chartplotter/MFD control a new autopilot?
Most autopilots allow an MFD to set a heading as an external controller.
Additionally, if the autopilot is of the same brand as the MFD, then the MFD can often calibrate and commission the autopilot.
Also, if the pilot and the MFD are of the same brand, MFD can often be the primary controller of the autopilot (depending on the model).
Contact us to ensure that a new autopilot will work with your existing electronics, or as part of a complete new package.
Does a new autopilot have to be the same brand as other electronics onboard?
Not necessarily. Autopilots integrate and function better with electronics of the same brand, but usually most autopilots can communicate to a limited extent with electronics of another brand.
Please contact us to ensure what can work.
What is a rudder feedback unit (RFU) and is it needed with a new autopilot?
A Rudder Feedback Unit (RFU) provides a measurement of the rudder position to the
autopilot. It helps the autopilot keep a proper course and reduces oversteering
or zigzagging.
Certain autopilots require an RFU, though even if not required, an RFU is a highly
recommended addition to any autopilot.
Often it is difficult to install an RFU on certain boats – please contact us and we will help with a solution.
