The Orion XS represents a ground-up redesign of Victron's DC-DC charging lineup, and in almost every measurable way it surpasses its predecessors.
The XS 1400 can be configured for both 12V and 24V input and output, while the standard XS is limited to 12V to 12V applications.
Designed specifically for dual battery systems in vehicles and vessels, the Orion XS charges a service battery from a starter battery and alternator using a fully programmable four-stage charge algorithm: bulk, absorption, float, and storage.
The storage stage actively maintains battery health during extended periods of inactivity by holding a slightly reduced voltage to minimise gassing and extend battery life — a refinement over the three-stage algorithm found in earlier Orion models.
Smart Alternator Compatibility
The Orion XS is specifically engineered to work with modern ECU-controlled smart alternators found in Euro 5 and Euro 6 vehicles. These alternators deliver variable output voltage and shut down when not needed, which can confuse simpler DC-DC chargers into either failing to charge or draining the starter battery.
The Orion XS solves this through integrated engine shutdown detection — automatically sensing whether the alternator is supplying power and activating charging only when appropriate, without requiring additional sensors or wiring modifications.
Both input and output current limits are independently adjustable in 0.1A increments from 1A to 50A, giving precise control over alternator loading — critical for protecting both conventional and smart alternators in lithium battery systems, where the low impedance of a depleted lithium bank can otherwise draw dangerously high current from the alternator.
Connectivity and Integration
The Orion XS integrates fully into the Victron ecosystem via both Bluetooth and a VE.Direct port. Bluetooth enables wireless configuration and monitoring through the VictronConnect app, including real-time performance data, charge history over 40 cycles, trend graphs, and instant readout of key parameters without needing to fully connect to the device.
The VE.Direct port allows wired integration with a Cerbo GX or other GX device, enabling remote monitoring and control via the VRM portal from anywhere in the world, and full DVCC (Distributed Voltage and Current Control) compatibility when managed by a BMS.
VE.Smart Networking allows the Orion XS to receive remote battery voltage, temperature, and current data wirelessly from a SmartShunt, BMV battery monitor, or Smart Battery Sense, using that data to optimise charge voltages and compensate for cable voltage drop in real time.
Also Functions as a DC Power Supply
In addition to battery charging, the Orion XS can be configured as a stable DC power supply with a fully adjustable output voltage, maintaining a steady output regardless of load variations or fluctuating input voltage — useful for powering sensitive electronics from a main DC bus.
