Cameras - FAQ

Where can Marine Cameras be mounted?

Marine Cameras can be mounted anywhere convenient on the boat above the waterline– they are exterior rated.

They can also be mounted in the engine room or other interior spaces.

What is an IP camera?

IP simply means Internet Protocol.

It is a common term used to refer to cameras that connect via network (ethernet) rather than older analog cable standards.

Do IP cameras require separate power?

Most IP cameras run on boat DC power, which means they will have both network and power wiring.

However some can run on Power Over Ethernet (POE) which will minimize cabling but add an extra POE module into the system configuration.

Do IP cameras have to match the brand of my Chartplotter?

Unfortunately yes, in many cases IP cameras are brand-specific.

There may be ways to cross-connect cameras, but if brand matching is maintained, then camera install is typically plug-and-play.

An exception to this are FLIR cameras, which generally work with all brands.

With which brands of Chartplotters can FLIR cameras connect to?

FLIR cameras are compatible and will connect with all current major Chartplotter brands, providing full display and control.

Is the JCU (joystick unit) required for operation of FLIR cameras?

While all major Chartplotter brands provide control over FLIR cameras without a JCU, a dedicated FLIR JCU is recommended for simple and direct fine tactile control of your FLIR camera.
